A common application for an RFID chip is plastic cards. Many companies choose RFID cards to provide a secure environment for staff and visitors. A chip integrated in the card regulates access and authorisations. The smart plastic card legitimises the cardholder and identifies him at any point or door. The most popolar RFID cards are at the moment the EM4200 and TK4102 read only cards as well as the Mifare, Mifare Desfire and Legic RFID cards.
The RFID chip in the plastic card contains a code that can be read with a reader. When the reader is approached, the RFID chip transmits the stored data via a micro-antenna on the card. The chip on the card draws the energy it needs for this from the magnetic field generated by the reader, which is why an RFID card does not have a battery. The software in the reader decodes the code received from the card and passes on the data for processing.
