You have never printed plastic cards? No problem - this is how it works ...
The card printer, like any other printer, is connected to your computer via USB cable or network connection. Printing on plastic cards basically works just like printing on paper. All you have to do is insert the matching color ribbon (this is easily done by opening the lid) and then choose between colorful and monochrome ribbons in the printing options. Approximately every 1000 prints you should clean the card printer with the special cleaning cards (duration about 2 minutes). You can start printing from any program (Word, Office, Open Office, Photoshop etc.). You do not need any special software. The application is very easy.

Printing plastic cards is basically as easy as printing on paper. However, there are a few peculiarities that you should consider and know before buying such a device:
Do I need special expertise?
No, you definitely do not need that. If you can connect and operate a normal paper printer, there are no problems with card printers.
How do I connect my printer?
Plastic card printers, like traditional paper printers, are connected to the printer via a USB cable or network cable. For plug-in printers, the installation of a driver is no longer necessary, for all other printers either the supplied printer driver is installed via the supplied CD or as a download.
Do I need special software?
No, you can print directly from all common programs like Word or Open Office. However, if you want to encode your plastic cards, no matter if magnetic stripes or chips, you need a special program and of course the corresponding coding stations in the printer and special cards.
How do I change a ribbon?
The manufacturers have made this as simple as possible. It opens only the lid or the front flap of the printer, the old ribbon can be easily removed from the printer and just as easy to use a new ribbon. For re-transfer printers, 2 tapes need to be inserted in a specific way - but this is also very straightforward and done within 1 minute.
Why are there special card printer cleaning kits?
Over time, dust and particles settle in the printer. Also, these are often found on the plastic cards. In order to obtain a uniformly good print image and to guarantee a smooth card feed, a cleaning should take place after about 1000 prints.
How do I clean my card printer?
In most cases, a special cleaning card is pushed into the printer, which cleans the mechanism and rollers. This can be repeated several times with one and the same cleaning card until the printer is again dust-free and ready for use. The time is just 2 minutes, but protects your card printer and is important for warranty claims.
Can I print on every card color?
In principle, yes. Only the printing color may appear differently on colored plastic cards than desired. The card color and the ribbon color mix so that e.g. a blue print on a green card suddenly appears brown-gray. Printing in black, white, gold and silver is possible on all card colors and does not change the appearance and color.
A colorful (YMCKO) print is only possible on white plastic cards.
How does a thermal transfer (sublimation) printer work?
These are the all-rounders among card printers (Evolis Zenius, Evolis Primacy, Zebra ZC series, etc.). Here is printed directly from the ribbon by means of heat on the plastic card. There are a variety of different monochrome printing ribbons and of course also ribbons for the colorful printing.
Advantages:
Cheap buying costs
Monochrome ribbons available
Special colors like gold and silver
Special ribbons, e.g. Scratch Off or for a signature field (depending on the manufacturer)
Compact and space-saving printers
Very simple operation
Upgradable with coding options and turning station (depending on the manufacturer)
Disadvantage:
No over the edge printing
What is a Re-transfer printer?
These card printers are specially designed for a great, colorful print image (Matica Printer, Evolis Avansia, Authentys 8100 etc.). Unlike the Re-transfer printers, it is first printed on a special carrier foil, which is then applied to the card again with high heat. This enables brilliant printing results and over the edge card printing. If this excellent print quality is not enough for you, then opt for the high-end devices (Matica XID8600 or Evolis Avansia) with a resolution of up to 600 dpi.
Advantages:
Particularly good print quality, near offset print quality
Resolution up to 600 dpi for the finest lines and micro-typefaces
Absolutely over the edge printing
Optional special laminating and safety modules
Upgradable with various coding options and turning station
Disadvantage:
Higher acquisition costs
No monochrome printing tapes
Which plastic cards can I take?
The plastic cards we offer in the standard size 85 x 54 mm and a thickness of 0.76 mm usually work with all card printers. For special high-end printers you may need special composite cards. If you want to print a different card size or thicker or thinner cards, this depends on the configuration of your printer.
How fast do the devices print?
Here a distinction is made between the colorful and the monochrome printing. Of course, this depends on the individual devices and your computer setting, but a guideline is as follows:
Colorful print per card page: 30 - 60 seconds
Monochrome print per card page: 3-9 seconds
Which is the right printer for me?
We can not answer you that blanket. This depends on your requirements and wishes to the printer and of course a little on the estimated budget. We are happy to find out for you which printer models are ideal for your project - just contact us by e-mail at info@kartenstudio.com or call us on +49 8094 - 66 899 85.
